"We've been painting contractors in Portland for 25 years. Duration is the best exterior paint that we've found. Its a bit spendy, but worth the extra money, particularly on trim.

Great paint!

"I've been a homeowner for over 25 years and this is by far the best exterior house paint I've ever used. One section I painted has lasted over 10 years without chipping on a west-facing front porch. The only reason I have to re-paint is that something (a bird?) flew into it and left a mark, and it's gotten dirty. I'm expecting this will be the last time I have to paint the front porch before I sell the house, which I expect will be in about 15 years."

"We repainted a white rail fence with the SW Duration paint two years ago and it is still standing up to the harsh Georgia heat. This stuff is not paint. It is more like a coating. I strongly recommend the SW Duration product."

The Best

"My husband is a professional painter, which kind of makes me like the shoemaker's wife who had no shoes. I end up doing a lot of painting myself, but that's fine, since I'm a SAHM and he taught me well.
We have a 1904 cape in Vermont. For about 60 years, the original clapboards were covered with asbestos siding, which we had professionally removed. My husband painted the house in 2003 with an oil paint, and it was starting to flake and fade.
The clapboards looked so terrible that we debated just putting on vinyl siding. I thought that I would give Duration a try, since my husband had said that it is the best exterior paint on the market, and see if there was a possibility that we could use it, since painting would be a lot less expensive.
It is still important to prep the area by scraping, but Duration is amazing. When they say one coat, they mean it. It goes on thick and has covered the most beaten up and worn boards very well. I can't believe the difference it has made. There were areas that basically just looked horrible that now look great. It went over the last coat of oil without priming which saves a ton of work. Why paint your house twice when you can get the job done in one coat?
This is totally worth the money and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Not for Cedar or Alaska
 December 10, 2011
 December 10, 2011

"The cedar siding and decks of my Alaska home were professionally painted in August 2011. Duration paint was used on the siding and Deckscapes stain was used on two decks. The contractor scraped, sanded, caulked, and applied Pro Block oil primer prior to painting. It rained after the initial painting and the contractor came back several days later during dry weather and extensively repainted. However, blistering, peeling, cracking, and streaking was evident several days later on the siding and decks. The contractor came back a third time to try and rectify the problems. The last paint job looked reasonably good until high winds accompanied by heavy rains occurred during September and October. Some blisters the size of golf and tennis balls were actually filled with water. Below freezing temperatures in November and December have caused the blistering, peeling, and streaking to progress to the point where it is very noticeable. Since cedar is a soft wood that tends to hold moisture longer than other woods, my personal experience suggests that Duration paint is not a good choice for cedar. Further, this paint has not stood up to the very harsh weather conditions in Alaska."

"I'm the painter with 10-years experience. Duration is my first choice for exterior projects. When you paint outside you cannot cut cost using cheap paint. You will pay double. Duration provides thick coat and great coverage. Never had problems with peeling etc. It's a pricey paint but worth the money."

Only appears expensive

"The retail price seems expensive, however, the coverage is awesome. One coat and it's done. So you have half the work as a two coat paint and use half is much.
Once you figure the time savings and coverage advantages over other paints, it's a bargain."

"we live in Maine in a 1820 colonial and used Duration on the old wood siding. The house is too big to paint in one season. As I get ready to work on a new side the choice of paint has already been decided. If every side of our house comes out as good as the ones from last year, we will never use vinyl and our house will have its original antique look for the next 200 yrs!"

"Use this when you want to get it done in one coat. I used the flat and it goes on thick, flows perfectly, looks great. This would be pricy for a whole house, but for the trim it was really great."

"This is one of the best paints ever invented.
Researching what you or a contractor is going to paint on your home is important.
Check the labels and read all the ingredients.
All exterior paints are not created equal.
Proper Prep work is even more important.
You need to wash your home with a quality biodegradable cleaner to remove dirt and mildew....then scrape or sand all surfaces to be painted.
Caulk....
Apply (2) two coats of Sherwin Williams Duration
Then sit back and relax for the next 10yrs!
It's that good

Still beautiful after 9 years!

"Boy, I wish I could attach a photo to the reviews. I painted my home with SW Duration nine years ago. Satin siding and glosss trim. Nine wet, cold Pacific Northwest winters and nine hot, dry summers. It still looks new. No maintainance for all that time until now. The only weathering was at the lower tips of my gables, where the icicles hang and break off. This weekend, I took 2 hours and scraped, primed, and re-painted all my gable ends - and only the last 4 inches needed re-touching. I bet I don't have to touch it again for 9 more years."

"I used Duration Exterior Paint on my house by a lake in South Dakota -- needless to say, it takes a beating from the weather. It's been a few years since I applied it, and I have to say that it is exceeding my expectations thus far, both in terms of colorfastness and in terms of standing up to the elements. Coverage is excellent. I've always been a "two coats" kind of gal, but for the first time ever, this was a one coat job -- even for ME!
Moreover, I have to say that this is hands down the best paint I've ever applied. It really goes on nice and creamy -- makes painting a pleasure (at least as much of a pleasure as painting will ever be for me!). It goes on as a nice, thick, even coating. I'm hard to impress, but I was really impressed with this paint.
Personally, I don't love painting (don't hate it, but don't look forward to it). This paint costs a little more than buying Brand X stuff at the big box store, but it is soooooooo worth it. I tell all my friends, "Life is too short for cheap paint!" and I really believe that.
If you're going to spend the time and money to paint something, you might as well do it right, rather than do it twice. I am VERY HAPPY I invested in this particular paint."

Awesome paint for vinyl shake
 June 23, 2010
 June 23, 2010
by Mayate
"The exterior vinyl paint is awesome! The siding is a vinyl rough sawn shake which had badly faded. I had feared applying paint would create peeling. My neighbor works at SW Cleveland Headquarters and he assured me of its quality; Jamie even helped me select the color (Footprint SW383). (Even off the time clock SW employees give the best customer service!!!) After a thorough powerwash, a friend expertly applied the paint. The coverage, color and adherence is excellent. The paint seems to have even soaked into the vinyl rather than sit on top. Overall, I like the color and the effect it gives the shake vinyl even better than when the vinyl siding was brand new. I feel confident it will hold up through the harsh Lake Effect snowstorms. Thanks!"

"As a contractor who has been in the business for over 30 years, I have always demanded excellence from my crew in our work ethic and from my paint in performance. I have almost exclusively used Ben Moore's Moorgard and Moorglo paints on all my exterior projects, but was asked by a homeowner a few years ago to use Duration on the brick exterior of his antebellum home. Long story made short: I now use Duration almost exclusively on all my exterior projects (I still have a few customers who insist on Ben Moore). Duration has held up extremely well on that house. And what I learned from that job and subsequent jobs is that Duration paint offers ease of application, quick drying time, and excellent durability. The fact that it can serve as its own Primer cuts down on time, which of course means Money! Use this paint and make your customers happy."

"We had our house painted with SW Duration paint almost 2 yrs, ago. First off, it covered beautifully (aluminum siding)in one coat, no primer need. Pro painter was AMAZED. He was a big Benjamin Moore fan. Because we contracted for 2 coats and had already bought enough for 2 coats - we did the two, but it was really not necessay. The paint has help up beautifully. We live n the northeast and our weather runs the gamut.. We are verpy pleased. Worth every penny!. As always. good prep work is key."

Side Project

"When doing side jobs such as painting I have always tried to sue the best products available. However I am just finishing a project of painting the trim on the house for my daughters friend. Her friend had already bought the paint from a well known home retailer wich I figured what the heck its suppose to be good. Well it was nightmare 2-3 coats on just about everything. However when it came to doing the gutters and roof trim I said no way I am going up and down a 40 foot ladder 2-3 times every time. I went out and bought some Duration and saved my legs. Just one coat looked better than the 3 coats I had to use with the other paint. Thank God it saved my legs from aches and pains."
